School: District of Columbia International School
Mary Shaffner is the Founding Executive Director of District of Columbia International School. She led the effort to build the school serving as its Board Chair, visionary, and organization lead during the planning year. She then moved in to the role of ED with ultimate responsibility for the success of the IB, Language Immersion middle and high school. DCI opened in 2014-15 with 210 students and will grow to 1200 students. It is the first school to establish a feeder pattern for elementary public charter schools. In 2012, Ms. Shaffner left her position as Executive Director of Washington Yu Ying to pursue opening DCI. From 2008 until 2012, she was the Founding Executive Director of Washington Yu Ying PCS where she successfully led the school from its opening in. Yu Ying achieved great financial and educational success under her leadership, her team achieved PCSB Tier 1 status, IB World School, purchased its permanent home at 220 Taylor Street and built extensive waitlists. She successfully led and managed the business, operations, financial and outreach activities of the school since efforts to establish Yu Ying began in 2005. She has more than 20 years experience in management and marketing in not-for-profit organizations and the private sector. She has an MBA and a BA in International Affairs from George Washington University. She has called the District of Columbia her home for over twenty-five years. She has two children who attend Yu Ying and will attend DCI.
